Tin Roof shuts downSo I'm pretty bummed out. Tin Roof Barbecue, which was right down the street from me in Hoover, Alabama, has shut down. I'm guessing it had to do with multiple failures on health inspections (it was never the cleanest feeling place), but the food was always good, and they had a good sauce selection. Golden Rule sold to Florida manAl.com reported today that Golden Rule has been sold to a Florida man who owns Mrs. Winner's restaurants around the country. The sellers have owned the chain for years and will continue to operate four franchises, including the original Irondale location. Golden Rule has been in business since 1891. Basic vinegar-based barbecue sauceVinegar-based barbecue sauce is a staple of northeastern South Carolina (the Sandhills region around Florence, Sumter and Marion), and it's what people across the country typically call North Carolina style sauce. Unlike a typical barbecue sauce, which is a balancing act of sweet and tart, most people make this stuff all about the vinegar. |

They seem to be staying busy and have heard many good things about them. We got the pulled pork with potato salad and cole slaw. The sauce is sweet and seems to be vinegar based. I am not sure if the meat is basted in the sauce but it is very juicy and it can be eaten without anything added. Potato salad was dill based and very good. Cole slaw was also good. Web site:

Country’s BarbecueCountry's has been a staple of my BBQ eating since I was a kid. It seems like it's been around Auburn forever, and even though this isn't the first (or even primary) location, it's the one I went to first and the one I remember most. Web site:

Daddy D'z BBQ JoyntThere are puh-lenty of BBQ places in the Greater Atlanta Metro Area, and I'm slowly exploring all of 'em. First off, the legendary Daddy D'z BBQ Joynt. You drive up, and it looks like just another dive. A dive painted with portraits of blues legends, true, but a dive nonetheless. Okay, yeah, a dive with giant cut-out letters over the door reading "I'm Dyin For Daddy D'z BBQ Joynt." So it ain't yer typical dive. But like it says on their website, "We ain't pretty, but we're good." Web site:

Ole Time BarbecueWhen a barbecue restaurant sells itself as, "A Great Place to Get PORKED," you can only hope that it's more of a promise than a threat. As it turns out, Ole Time Barbecue provides the good kind of "PORKED." The place scores plenty of character points by being one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it, roadside hole-in-the-walls that's pretty much guaranteed to pump out some good BBQ. There aren't a ton of tables, so be prepared to wait if things are hopping. But soon as you sit down, you're welcomed with a huge basket of hushpuppies...piping hot and addictively sweet. Web site:
